Lake Murray Drops Toward 350 Feet This December. Here's What It Uncovers Below a Night Harbor Dock

During an earlier drawdown on Lake Murray, a Chapin homeowner told WLTX that he could walk to a neighbor's dock without touching water. In the same report, Chapin residents described finding arrowheads, safes, laptops and a fish one of them thought looked like a piranha on lake bottom that is normally underwater.

That kind of winter is coming back. Dominion Energy is lowering the lake toward about 350 feet. For anyone with a dock off Night Harbor's shoreline in Chapin, the weeks around the low point are the one time in several years when the whole structure, from the decking down to the footings, is in reach from dry ground. The lake doesn't shut down while that happens.

Where the water line stands, and where it's going

Dominion announced the drawdown on September 9, 2026. It worked out the plan with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, and dam operators started lowering the lake that month.

Milestone Lake elevation Timing
Normal summer level 358 feet Summer
Gauge reading on Dominion's Lake Murray page 355.6 feet 4:59 a.m., October 19, 2026
Drawdown target About 350 feet December 2026
Hold at target About 350 feet Until the end of January 2027
Expected return 358 feet Late spring 2027, depending on rain and river flows

On the October 19 reading, the lake was about two and a half feet below summer pool, with more than five feet still to drop before December. The low point will hold for weeks, which matters more than the drop itself. It gives anyone who wants to see their shoreline, or work on it, a fixed window from December through the end of January.

Why the lake goes down at all

The drawdown targets the weeds. Dominion says certain aquatic plants grow in shallow coves and can wrap around boat propellers. Lowering the water leaves those plants out in dry air and freezing temperatures.

"Every few years we lower the lake so that we can limit growth of certain aquatic vegetation," Iris Griffin, Dominion Energy South Carolina's vice president of power generation, said in the company's release. "If left unchecked, the vegetation can negatively affect water quality and make recreational use of the lake difficult."

The last time Lake Murray reached 350 feet was January 2023. Norman Agnew, owner of Agnew Lake Service and a partner in the Spirit of Lake Murray, told WLTX that a drop to that level is "semi-common" and usually comes every three to five years. He added that businesses don't know when the next one is coming until Dominion announces it. So a lakefront owner may see only a handful of these in a decade, and each one comes with just a few months' notice.

What eight feet means in a cove

Eight feet off the top of a big reservoir barely shows from the main channel. In a shallow cove, it can take most of the water. The Chapin resident in the earlier WLTX report said his cove usually held five to seven feet of water, and that past drawdowns had left roughly one or two feet. That winter went lower. By the days after Christmas, he said, only a few pools were left, with fallen timber sticking out of a flat, dry lakebed.

The same story described:

  • Fish caught in the leftover pools, with herons moving in to feed on them
  • A resident putting on borrowed waders to pick up pieces of an irrigation pipe that burst during a cold snap
  • Homeowners using the low water to repair docks, clear debris and litter, and cut back weeds along the shoreline

Every cove sits at its own depth, so the same 350-foot level will look different from one Night Harbor lot to the next. On the water, Dominion says many coves and inlets will be shallower than usual, and it is urging boaters to use extra caution. Agnew told WLTX that hazards normally covered by deeper water can come closer to the surface as the lake drops. A route you've run a hundred times at 358 feet becomes a different route at 350.

The work window under the dock

Dominion pitches the low water as a chance to work, too. Griffin said the drawdown "gives lake residents and businesses an opportunity to perform maintenance and repairs on their private docks or shorelines." WLTX made the same point, describing docks, shoreline walls and similar structures that are normally hard to get to.

The crews doing that work change how they reach the job. Agnew said most of his company's dock repair equipment is built to float right up to a dock, and his crews can also bring in equipment that drives across the exposed lake bottom when they need to.

Dominion handles permits for residential docks, boat ramps, retaining walls and similar shoreline work through an online application on its Lake Murray page. The page asks applicants to have their property's tax map number and plat on hand. The drawdown announcement does not mention any separate permit rule for repairs made during low water. For questions about your own project, Dominion's Lake Management office is at 803-217-9221. This is general information, not legal advice. Dominion and a qualified contractor are the right people to confirm what your shoreline project needs.

The holiday calendar runs on the same weeks

The water drops while the lake's busiest social stretch of the year arrives, and the two calendars overlap almost exactly. The Spirit of Lake Murray lists a full winter schedule on its booking page:

  1. Fall Colors cruises, multiple dates November 1 to 29
  2. Friendsgiving cruises, multiple dates November 5 to 13
  3. Tacos Before Turkey, November 19 and 20
  4. History Cruises, multiple dates from November 21 through May 4, 2027
  5. Super Moon cruises, November 24 and 25
  6. Lights on the Lake, multiple dates December 3 to 27
  7. Christmas Parade Cruise, Saturday, December 5
  8. New Year's Eve cruise, December 31, 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The Christmas Parade Cruise listing says the boat will lead the lake's Christmas boat parade. Boarding opens at 5:30 p.m., the cruise runs from 6:00 to about 10:00 p.m., and tickets are $79 per person. The tickets list boarding at 216 Shadowood Drive in Irmo. Agnew told WLTX, though, that the boat's permanent spot at Agnew Lake Service is too shallow at the 350-foot contour, so the Spirit has to move during low water. Check the boarding location on your ticket again in the days before a December cruise.

Watching the parade from shore has its own history. The Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board presented the Christmas Light Boat Parade in 2023, and boats had to be at least 21 feet long to take part. That year's parade was set for December 2 at Lake Murray Dam Public Park on N. Lake Drive in Lexington. The park opened at 4:30 p.m., the boats set out at 6, and the evening offered free admission, carols and a fireworks finale, according to the Southwest Lexington Ledger. The tourism board is the place to check for this year's shoreline details.

Closer to Night Harbor, Dreher Island State Park lists three boat ramps, and its posted notices show no ramp closures. Dominion's warning about shallow coves applies to the trip out from any ramp, wherever you launch.

By late spring 2027, if rain and river flows cooperate, the lake should be back at 358 feet. Whatever is sitting on the cove floor or showing on a dock footing in January will be underwater again by then.

A drawdown is a good time to look at a lakefront property, because the shoreline structures that usually sit underwater are out in the open.
